In recent years, Vietnam – gay-friendly country has made positive strides recognizing the role of the LGBT community. Same-sex relationships and same-sex sexual acts are legal, and a ban on same-sex marriages was lifted in January 2015.
Is Vietnam a safe place for the LGBT community travel to?
Absolutely YES!!! Checking into hotels as a same-sex couple is perfectly acceptable in Vietnam. Transgender people were granted the right in November 2015 to legally undergo sex reassignment surgery. Both Hanoi and especially Ho Chi Minh City have gay scenes. Travelers are typically exempt from social stigma and usually find Vietnam as a welcoming destination.
1. Hanoi – the charming capital of Vietnam – is a city lost in time but quickly finding its queer feet.
The traffic is always the worst thing ever in the world, but travelers to Hanoi will fall in love with this eclectic mix of old and new where you can spend all day to explore local markets and temples before sipping sunset cocktails in a high-rise sky bar.
Hanoi Pride has been held and growing annually in September since 2012. This is one of the few open displays of LGBT Pride in Hanoi throughout the year.
The gay scene in the capital is more low-key than Ho Chi Minh City. GC Bar is the best-known and longest-running gay bar in Hanoi. The city boasts some well-located gay-friendly hotels, including Art Hotel, Trendy Hotel, and Artisan Boutique Hotel.
2. Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau – Friendly Places for LGBT
Ho Chi Minh City is always open to all visitors. It is easy to see images of LGBT couples holding hands on the central streets, or walking together, talking … Compared to other provinces in the country, Ho Chi Minh City is now considered as a “paradise place” of the gay community in Vietnam.
Ho Chi Minh City, which boasts many gay-friendly bars, restaurants, saunas, and hotels, is the most populous city in Vietnam. The largest gay club, Republic, features a drag show each Friday, live music on Saturdays and a large dance floor. Whiskey and Wares is another popular bar owned by American and Vietnamese partners that serves up whiskey, craft beer and some great cocktails in a small trendy space. Located on De Tham, it attracts a mix of gay and straight expats, locals and travelers.
